A Berte
I had many auditions at The National. For Hedda Gabler, I was told, the world-famous Ivo von Hove doesn’t like small talk, so just say hello and go for the scene. I said: fine with me. I did the first scene with the casting director. Before the beginning of the second, Ivo said: ‘ It’s enough’. No emotion at all. I thought: 'OK, it’s gone.’ Next day I was offered the role. When I asked Ivo a few weeks later how he decided in 1.30 minutes, he laughed and said: 'As you walked in and sat down, your energy, your personality. I wanted to play with that’. And God it was fun!
For a great director it does not matter who you were yesterday. Just who you are here and now. Keep yourself active, alive full of energy!
